dc.descriptionO artigo faz um balanço bibliográfico das formas como o tema da doença mental tem sido tratado pela literatura especializada no Brasil. Nesta direção, discorre sobre os principais textos, seus autores e filiações teóricas, tratando particularmente dos trabalhos considerados clássicos, dos estudos influenciados por Michel Foucault, e das contribuições elaboradas a partir da interlocução da história com a perspectiva cultural, em especial as análises antropológicas que tem gerado trabalhos representativos de uma antropologia histórica. Nos estudos clássicos aponta o desenvolvimento incipiente do tema da doença mental, preterido pela centralidade concedida ao caráter científico e assistencial da psiquiatria. E, no que se refere às análises que privilegiam uma visada cultural, ressalta o caráter multifacetado que a questão da doença mental assume.
dc.descriptionThe article makes a bibliographical review of the modes that the subject matter of mental illness has been treated by the specialized literature in Brazil. In this fashion, it discusses about the main texts, their authors and theoretical affiliations. It particularly deals with the considered classic works, the studies influenced by Michel Foucault, and the contributions brought about from the dialogue of history with the cultural perspective; especially the anthropological analyses that have engendered representative works of a historical anthropology. Concerning the classic studies, it points out the incipient development of the subject of mental illness, which was neglected by the centrality given to the scientific and caring nature of the psychiatry. Also, concerning to the analyses that favor a cultural sight, it highlights the multifaceted character that the issue of mental illness takes on.
