As leishmanioses são um conjunto de doenças causadas por protozoários parasitas do gênero Leishmania, os quais são transmitidos para o hospedeiro vertebrado por insetos flebotomíneos. Diferentes espécies de Leishmania podem causar distintas manifestações clínicas da doença e o curso da infecção também sofre influência da composição genética do hospedeiro. Muito do que sabemos sobre a resposta do indivíduo à infecção por Leishmania vem do estudo com camundongos. Algumas linhagens de camundongos são resistentes à infecção enquanto outras são extremamente suscetíveis, permitindo estudar os mecanismos imunes que regulam a resposta ao parasita. A seguir, serão revisados os modelos experimentais utilizados no estudo das leishmanioses causadas por Leishmania amazonensis e Leishmania braziliensis.Leishmaniases are a group of diseases caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Leishmania, which are transmitted to the vertebrate host by phlebotomine insects. Different Leishmania species may induce distinct clinical manifestations of the disease, and infection outcome is also influenced by the host’s genetic background. Most of the knowledge on individual response comes from studies conducted in mice. Some mice strains are susceptible to infection, whereas others are extremely resistant, a fact that allows the study of the underlying mechanisms regulating the immune response to infection.
