O artigo pretende discutir a ligação entre a produção documental e o processo artístico no arquivo pessoal de um artista plástico a partir da experiência de organização do arquivo pessoal de Rubens Gerchman,custodiado pelo Instituto Rubens Gerchman. Tendo como pressuposto que os documentos do arquivo pessoal do artista auxiliam na compreensão das suas obras, analisamos um exemplo da interpenetração entre a documentação e o processo de criação artística a partir da reutilização de seus documentos pessoais na obra Dupla Identidade. Entendemos que o arquivo do artista é parte essencial do processo de entendimento de sua obra plástica e essa rica relação deve estar presente nos instrumentos de pesquisa produzidos pela organização do acervo do mesmo, devendo os profissionais encarregados do tratamento técnico estar atentos a essas relaçõesThe article intends to discuss the connection between documentary production and the artistic process in a personal archive of a plastic artist from the experience of organizing the personal archive of Rubens Gerchman, guarded by the Rubens Gerchman Institute. Assumption that the documents of the personal archive of the artist help in the understanding of his works, we analyze an example of the interpenetration between the documentation and the process of artistic creation from the reutilization of his personal documents in the work Double Identity. We understand that the artist’s archive is an essential part of the process of understanding his artistic work, and this rich relationship must be present in the research instruments produced by the organization of the artist’s collection, and the professionals in charge of the technical treatment must be attentive to these relations
