Introduction: Although recent research claim that about 3.2 million fetal deaths occur every
year, and 98% of them in developing countries, little attention has been given to the fetal
mortality, especially in the Northeast. Goal: Describe the major causes and risk factors for
fetal mortality in the State of Pernambuco. Methodology: A descriptive study, in which we
analyzed the cases of fetal deaths from 2000 to 2011 in the State of Pernambuco. The
information was obtained through the information systems on mortality and live births
information system. Results: 21,237 fetal deaths were registered in the period studied for a
fetal mortality rate corresponding to 11.8 per thousand live births. The main root causes
according to the chapters of Icd10 were: the CPC XVI-Some disorders originating in the
perinatal period (94.4%), followed by the 17TH CPC-causes congenital malformations,
deformities and chromosomal abnormalities (4.8%) and of the causes of Cap I-Some
infectious and parasitic diseases (0.8%). The risk factors identified for mothers were: age less
than 30 years (62.8%), have less than eight years of education (50%) and have a single
pregnancy (87.8%). For the stillborn, the risk factors recorded were: low birth weight
(56.4%); the prematurity (58%) and males (53.1%). For childbirth-related variables were: the
vaginal birth (71.4%); the anteparto period (86.4%), and the majority of births took place in
hospital fetal stationary situation (92.8%).Conclusion: Some were predictable risk factors
that suggest that there is a need to concentrate efforts, especially in improving compliance
with the Statements of deaths, and better prenatal care and delivery assistance, so that we
have a reduction in the number of fetal deaths in the State of Pernambuco.
