Resumen
INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are recognized as a dysfunction that directly affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the muscles of the mastication and the cervical spine due to multiple factors. These TTMs considerably compromise the health status of the individuals who suffer from it,
affecting the performance of functions such as chewing, phonation, swallowing and others, altering the quality of life and carrying out daily activities. It is necessary to raise awareness among the affected population about changes in lifestyles, as well as to minimize parafunctional habits, so that TTMs stop being a public health problem. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a university population of Cartagena. METHODS: This study is of a transversal descriptive type, was carried out in students of the Physiotherapy program of the University of San Buenaventura Cartagena. The sample was randomly selected and 159 students were evaluated with the objective of clinically diagnosing the TTM, through the instrument: questionnaire of the CDI / TTM index of the authors Leresche, Dworkin and Col. RESULTS: The students who participated had a mean in relation to the age of 20 years. According to the surveyed population 81.13% was female, while 18.87% was male. According to the total population surveyed, it was observed that in parafunctional habits 64 participants of the study present unilateral chewing, 121
individuals chew gum, 67 eat nails, 80 participants chew a pen and 37 grind their teeth. Of the total population studied, 83.6% did not present any type of temporomandibular disorder and only 16.3% had TTM, of which 6.9% presented a muscular type disorder, 6.3% presented a type disorder. joint and 3.1% of the
