Resumen
The Llanos Foothills are located on the eastern flank of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. This area has been studied in good detail by several companies from the oil & gas industry due to the presence of hydrocarbons. However, given the complexity of the area, the interpretation and understanding of the structural aspects and tectonic evolution of the area is challenging, especially for the deeper zones, where seismic data do not provide good resolution. At the beginning of 2022, Ecopetrol commissioned the acquisition of airborne gravity and gravity gradient data in the area, which were used in this study. It is worth mentioning that the National Hydrocarbon Agency also acquired aerogravimetric data in Colombia, however, these datasets are not publicly available. Also, previous studies of gravity data modelling in the area of the Llanos Foothills cannot be found in the public domain.
The purpose of the current study was the analysis, modelling, and interpretation of the iFTG gravity data acquired by Ecopetrol in the area of the Llanos Foothills in 2022, in order to estimate the geometry and depth of geological structures, with a focus on the unconformity between the basement and the sedimentary cover. For this purpose, a qualitative analysis of the Bouguer anomaly and the vertical gradient data was carried out, four transects perpendicular to the main geological structures to be modelled were defined, and 2D modelling of the Bouguer anomaly along these transects was completed.
As result of this study, a model of the structural and geological configuration of the Llanos Foothills was obtained, based on the interpretation of the existence of a deep basement structure that determines the position of the deformation front. This structure is likely responsible for the width of the Llanos Foothills, which is anomalously narrow compared to other foreland fold and thrust belts around the world.
