José Toribio Medina y Gabriela Mistral ante Pompeya: experiencia histórica y poética de viajes en dos momentos

Abstract

El capítulo analiza el testimonio del viaje a Pompeya de dos intelectuales chilenos, José Toribio Medina y Gabriela Mistral, realizados en dos momentos diferentes, a fines del siglo XIX y a mediados del XX, para comprender y contrastar estas experiencias a partir de los contextos objetivos y subjetivos que las definieron. El análisis rescata la experiencia personal de los viajes y las estrategias desplegadas por ambos autores para lidiar con la alteridad en el encuentro con un sitio que pre-conocían por sus estudios y para volverlos inteligibles a partir de sus propios intereses y vivencias.

The chapter analyzes the testimony of the trip to Pompeii of two Chilean intellectuals, José Toribio Medina and Gabriela Mistral, made at two different moments, at the end of the 19th century and in the middle of the 20th, to understand and contrast these experiences from the objective and subjective contexts that defined them. The analysis rescues the personal experience of the trips and the strategies deployed by both authors to deal with the alterity in the encounter with a place that they previously knew from their studies and to make it intelligible based on their own interests and experiences.
