The spectacled owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata) is one of the 27 species of the family Strigidae
present in Colombia. Despite its wide distribution in the country, trophic ecology has only
been studied in the municipality of Ciudad Bolívar, Antioquia and partially in the municipality
of Manizales, Caldas. Therefore, we identified the preys found in pellets of the spectacled
owl and the consumption preference in two localities of the municipality of Manizales, central
Andes of Colombia. In total, were collected 203 pellets, including 168 preys grouped in 4
classes (Insecta, Amphibia, Reptilia and Mammalia) 8 orders, 4 families and 12 genera of
vertebrates and 1 genus of invertebrates. In the first locality represented by a fragmented
forest, the marsupial, Didelphis marsupialis, had the highest frequency of occurrence
percentage (%FO) with 24.63%. Other prey identified were the exotic rats Rattus (23.13%),
marsupial Marmosa sp. (4.48%) and the sparrow Zonotrichia capensis (2.24%). For the
second locality corresponding to a peri-urban forest, marsupials of the genus Marmosa were
the most common prey (23.19%), followed by exotic rats (Rattus), and bats of the genus
Artibeus. In both localities the mammals had the highest biomass contribution (99.44% and
96.55%). It was possible to show that in both localities P. perspicillata is a generalist predator
of both native and exotic species. However, at least 7 species constitute new items in the
diet of the spectacled owl. These diet results contribute to a better knowledge of the eating
habits of the spectacled owl in Colombia. Universitario Biólogo(a) Ecología trófica
