The Orteguaza River is one of the main water tributaries of Caquetá that offers ecosystem services related to transportation, food, water regulation, etc. The basin has a great variety and quantity of wetlands, permanent and temporary, that depend on the seasonality of rains, however, there is no proper management of these when the level of the river and the flooding increase. The objective of this article was to carry out an approximation exercise to identify the water, wetland and non-wetland areas present in an area of the main channel of the Orteguaza River, which are formed in two extreme months of precipitation. Through satellite images and information on precipitation from IDEAM, together with the exercise with GIS tools, a series of maps on the flooding of the hydrographic basin were obtained, which allowed the identification of the difference in area and percentage of occupation of the study coverage in the two extreme months and how these influence the activities of the human being and how they can be affected.
