Resumen
This paper identifies problems related to project management in the company Alcanos de Colombia S.A. E.S.P., an organization whose main economic activity is the distribution of domestic natural gas in nine departments of Colombia. The difficulties related to project management are related to the way in which projects are identified, planned and executed in the organization. In Alcanos it is evident that in the last four years the expansions of new home gas distribution networks have contracted, resulting in a low growth in terms of home coverage compared to 2013 and 2014. This behavior of lower investments has materialized due to the fact that the project management currently developed by the company is not sufficiently standardized, i.e. there is a lack of guidelines and methodologies for project management. Therefore, in the last three years the company has only planned and executed two investment projects, which are not enough to promote competitive growth and improve service delivery to Colombian households. Within this framework, it is proposed to establish a project management methodology applicable to the organization, based on the PMBOK project management standard of the Project Management Institute (PMI). For its development, a primary information gathering instrument was designed to generate a diagnosis of the current situation of project management in the organization. This instrument provides the identification of gaps and weaknesses in various factors and dimensions in project management, and allows the design of the best proposal adaptable to the organization's own needs.
