Resumen
Introduction: low levels of physical activity and sleep in schoolchildren are a major
problem, which need to be evaluated. The accelerometry measurement is the most
reliable and objective method for the timely detection of these.
Objective: Identify the relationship of the Body Mass Index with the form of sleep and
levels of Physical Activity through accelerometry, in schoolchildren of a district
educational institution.
Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional design was performed in 13 schoolchildren
(53.8% children) between the ages of 9.0 and 13.9, belonging to a district educational
institution. Physical activity and sleep form levels were identified by ActiGraph
GT3X/+accelerometers and the Body Mass Index (BMI) by the bioimpedance scale.
Results: The mean age of those evaluated was 11.35 0.149 years. Observing a
significant value of p < 0.05 in the mean differences in BMI, weight, height, age and
sex. Accelerometry showed an average for total bedtime (TTC) of 9.14 hrs, total sleep
time (TTS) 6.57 hrs and the percentage of sedentarism (81.86%); the number of
awakenings during the night was identified with an average of 19.49 times.
Conclusion: Greater sedentarism was identified in school children, total time in bed
and less sleep, however, no relationship was found between the study variables. A
larger sample size is required for better analysis of the variables.
