Resumen
The present work aimed to identify the main determinants in the decisions taken during the Food Introduction of children hospitalized at the Hospital Universitário de Santa Maria (HUSM) . This is a qualitative research, which included parents or guardians of children aged between six months and three years, hospitalized in the Pediatric Unit of HUSM. The children's medical history, available in electronic medical records, were also considered. The research observed the ethical criteria determined by Resolution No. 466 of 2012. The questionings started from semi-structured interviews and the speeches underwent content analysis. Afterwards, the results were grouped into categories. Fifteen participants, predominantly mothers with low education and income, were included. Regarding the children, eight had pathologies that required follow-up. The main findings indicate that food generates concerns for the children's health. In addition, the main determinants found were the influence of the guidance of health professionals, personal beliefs and myths, interference from third parties, information from the internet, consideration of childhood particularities and the performance of multiple roles assigned to women. The results are in line with previously documented studies, revealing that parents' previous experience and knowledge, sociodemographic characteristics and information received from different sources significantly influence Food Introduction. It is concluded that the Food Introduction is an intense learning period, which shape eating habits and reflect on the individual's health. Therefore, it is essential that parents or guardians receive support through necessary information and assistance. It should be noted that health professionals play a fundamental role in the pursuit of this purpose.
