O brincar na intervenção da terapia ocupacional nas rotinas hospitalares

Hospitalization causes a break in the daily life and habits of any patient. However, with
children, it must be understood that the inability to understand what is experienced can lead to
ruptures, which makes this period even more delicate. In this scenario, behavioral disorders and
even mood disorders can occur (for example, aggressiveness, excessive fear, depressive
disorder) and negatively affect the patient's recovery. This study aims to describe the
importance of the work developed by the Multidisciplinary Resident of Occupational Therapy
(OT) in the intra-hospital environment, through playing with hospitalized pediatric patients
admitted to a regional hematology-oncology center located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul,
Brazil. These are two case reports that objectively illustrate the performance of the
Multidisciplinary Resident of Occupational Therapy (OT), who uses the act of playing as a
therapeutic resource that aims to help hospitalized pediatric patients to deal with the demands
caused by the disease, treatment, and hospital routine. The first moment refers to the difficulty
that arose with the child's feeding and the intervention strategies. The second one describes the
use of toys to help the pediatric patient to understand the interventions carried out in the dayto-day of the hospitalization, in addition to the use of play as an aid in basic care and patient
hygiene (for example, during the collection of blood tests, bathing, diaper changing). In both
moments, the intervention of the Multidisciplinary Resident of Occupational Therapy (OT) was
described and how such actions help the pediatric patient to better deal with the negative
feelings and losses caused by the hospital routine, contributing for these to be worked in a way
that facilitate development through play. Through play, the child played with day-to-day
activities to understand his routine, managed to feed himself and accepted to put on his diaper,
through activities developed through the OT core expertise.
