Resumen
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a functional disorder characterized by secretion of
digestive enzymes by the acinar cells, resulting in malabsorption and long-term malnutrition
syndrome. It is considered, in cats, one of the diseases that affect the exocrine pancreas, although
little reported and underdiagnosed. Some factors are described in the literature as causing this
however, it is believed that the final stage of chronic pancreatitis is the most accepted. The
objective of this paper is to report the case of a twelve-year-old feline of undefined breed, which
was treated at the Veterinary University Hospital Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (HVUUFSM) for complaining of progressive weight loss, polyphagia, polydipsia, increased frequency
of defecation and softened feces for seven months. On physical examination, the animal presented
a poor body score, with a greasy coat and pale mucous membranes. After laboratory tests,
complementary examinations, and drug therapy, the diagnosis and clinical response were
established, culminating in improvement of clinical signs and recovery of the general condition of
the animal. We conclude that IPE should always be considered as a possible diagnosis in patients
with nonspecific gastrointestinal clinical signs.
