Currently, the search for alternatives for the replacement of conventional plastics has been growing, since they have a very long period of degradation when compared to bioplastics, which are more eco-friendly. This work is a review of the literature about the use of starch, a natural polymer, abundant in nature, easy to obtain and low cost, from many sources, for the production of films with the addition of essential oils, in order to add antimicrobial properties. The main application of the starch film added with essential oils from various species of flora is in the food industry as an alternative solution for plastic packaging derived from petroleum, as in addition to being biodegradable, the antimicrobial properties arising from essential oils act directly in the preservation of food, may extend its shelf life.
