Orville Derby na Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de São Paulo e a construção da imagem do bandeiante (1895-1907)

Abstract

The historical production about the "bandeirismo", particularly as it approaches the construction of the image of "pioneer epic" has been very developed and over an extended period. Most scholars reflect on ways of using the heroic figure of the "bandeirante", mainly between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We can see the movement of the historiography in the theme, especially on the process of formation and the agents involved. Founded in the late of the 19th century, the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de São Paulo would have a decisive influence on the construction and legitimation of the "bandeirante" symbol. As a scientific institution, it shared the belief that science could play an active role in the development of São Paulo, and thus the desired political and cultural influence of the state through the federation at the Republic. This role is empirically verifiable in its publications, particularly in the journal published one year after the founding of the IHGSP, in 1895. Orville Adelbert Derby, one of the founders of the institution, would be relevant for the large number of articles published in the journal. Thus, the analysis of its historical scripts will allow a better understanding of the historiographical discussion about the time of the "bandeirismo", which does not exist only in the best known authors, but includes those who are not dedicated exclusively to the production of historical narratives, such as the author concerned.

A produção historiográfica sobre o bandeirismo, particularmente a que aborda a construção da imagem da “epopeia bandeirante”, tem se desenvolvido de maneira muito ativa e ao longo de um período extenso. Tendo em vista que a maioria dos estudiosos reflete sobre as formas da utilização da figura heroica do bandeirante, principalmente entre o final do século XIX e início do XX, podemos verificar o movimento da historiografia que trata do tema, sobretudo no que diz respeito ao processo de formação e dos agentes nele envolvidos. Fundado em fins do século XIX, o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de São Paulo teria exercido uma influência decisiva sobre a construção e legitimação do símbolo bandeirante. Sendo considerada uma instituição científica, partilhava da crença que as ciências poderiam ter um papel atuante no desenvolvimento de São Paulo e, logo, na almejada influência política e cultural do estado em meio à federação republicana. Esse papel é empiricamente verificável em suas publicações, particularmente na revista que começou a ser editada um ano após a fundação do Instituto, em 1895. Orville Adelbert Derby, um dos fundadores da instituição, teria relevância pelo expressivo número de artigos publicados na Revista. Assim, a análise de sua produção historiográfica permitirá uma melhor compreensão do debate da época acerca do bandeirismo, que não se encerra somente nos autores mais conhecidos, mas incorpora aqueles que não se dedicaram exclusivamente à produção de narrativas históricas, como é o caso do autor em questão.
