The expression of the imperative mode in Brazilian Portuguese is characterized by alternating
between morphologically related forms to the indicative mode (canta/não canta) and to the
subjunctive mode (cante/não cante), used interchangeably with the pronouns tu or você.
Justified by the theoretical-methodological framework of Labovian Variationist
Sociolinguistics, this work investigates the expression of the phenomenon in reference to the
second person of the speech in popular varieties of Portuguese of Bahia. Our goal is to
identify and discuss the usage patterns and variation constraints. To this end, we investigated
the speech samples that make up the corpus of the popular Portuguese of Bahia, collected and
processed by the Vertentes Project (Federal University of Bahia), namely: i) corpus of
African-Brazilian Portuguese (Helvécia, Sapé, Cinzento and Rio de Contas); ii) corpus of the
countryside Portuguese of Bahia (Santo Antônio de Jesus and Poções); iii) corpus of the
popular Portuguese of Salvador (popular neighborhoods in Salvador - Itapuã, Plataforma,
Cajazeiras, Liberdade - and the metropolitan region, Lauro de Freitas). The data extracted
from speech samples of 164 illiterate and semi-literate informants of male and female genders
were divided into three age groups (25 to 35; 45 to 55; more than 65 years old) were
submitted to the statistical treatment of Goldvarb program. Considering the different patterns
of variation found, the results were arranged in two analytical frameworks: a) the rural
popular Portuguese of Bahia; b) the urban popular Portuguese of Bahia. As an additional step,
the application of evaluation tests with thirty speakers of Salvador has collaborated in the
interpretation of the variation and change picture by identifying the subjective reaction of the
speakers to the variants of the imperative. Among the main results found, we highlight the
division among rural dialects, with a predominance of forms associated with the indicative
(canta/ não canta), and urban, where the forms associated with the subjunctive (cante/ não
cante) prevail. The predominance of the indicative base forms in rural communities,
especially the African-Brazilian ones, points to a possible correlation with the lack of
morphology that marked the genesis of the popular standards of the Brazilian Portuguese.
Aspects of the socio-historical composition of Bahia and of the phenomenon realization in
Creole languages reinforce the hypothesis of a possible correlation with the process of contact
among languages. Moreover, the importance of the urbanization process of the state is
relevant in the dissemination of mandatory standards. Among the linguistic constraints
indicated by Goldvarb, aspects related to the verb (phonic boss, applied verb), to the speech
(formal parallelism, pronoun used with the speaker) and to sentence structure (polarity of the
structure, the subject pronoun presence, presence of vocative) were highlighted. In rural
popular Portuguese, the innovative variant of the subjunctive (cante) showed to be favored by
the schooling social factor. In urban communities, the conditioning of the phenomenon
demonstrated the influence of gender, media exposure (secular or religious) and the
neighborhood of the speaker. Ultimately, we highlight the contribution of this work to
enhance our understanding of isoglosses of the imperative to pointing out the complexity of
the phenomenon distribution in the state of Bahia.
