ABSTRACT- The characterization of the habitats of the Todos os Santos bay ( BTS ) is crucial for the correct management of the region's potential. Several efforts in this direction have already been made for at least 40 years, especially by researchers
linked to the Federal University of Bahia.
Through the integration of geophysical data, subsea and satellite imagery
and the results of other authors, this work contributes to the knowledge of the benthic habitats found in the northeast portion of the BTS, between the Frade and Maré
islands. Four habitat types were identified: intertidal outcrops, reef funds, bioturbated
mud and a transition habitat between rocky and muddy substrates.
The evolution of the marine transgression process that led to the last
event of flooding across the bay, from the transition between the Pleistocene and the
Holocene up to the present, was characterized by analysis of over 80 km of high resolution seismic profiles, covering an area approximately equal to 120 km2. Three flood pulses could be identified in the subsurface features. Concurretly, the
processes of erosion of paleo-topography and deposition of fine sediments on the
substrate in the region could be characterized.
From this analysis and the known aspects of the influence that these
processes have on the distribution of benthic habitats of marine environments, a
sequence was proposed for the evolution of the distribution of these habitats during
the Holocene and that may help to explain the current distribution and, perhaps,
predict a future status of the substrates of the region.
