This work aims to analyze the modern poetry about large cities in the book The tentacular cities (Les Villes tentaculaires, 1895) by Emile Verhaeren, based on the comparison with other poets who have also addressed this theme, as for example Charles Baudelaire and Walt Whitman. Different theoretical theorists were considered, among them Alfonso Berardinelli, Walter Benjamin and Gaston Bachelard. The specific objective is to analyze the manner of representation of the images of big cities in Verhaeren‟s poetry.Este trabalho tem como objetivo geral analisar a poesia moderna das grandes metrópoles no livro Cidades tentaculares (Les villes tentaculaires, 1895), de Emile Verhaeren, partindo da comparação com outros poetas que abordaram essa temática, como Charles Baudelaire e Walt Whitman. Foram consideradas teorias de diferentes autores, especialmente Alfonso Berardinelli, Walter Benjamin e Gaston Bachelard. O objetivo específico é analisar o modo de representação das imagens das grandes cidades na poesia de Verhaeren.
