dc.descriptionEste trabalho fornece uma revisão abrangente e sistemática da literatura sobre a internacionalização de moedas nacionais. Tem-se por objetivo principal elucidar a relação entre moeda e poder estatal a fim de melhor compreender a distribuição subsequente de riqueza e influência nas relações internacionais. Discute-se as origens da moeda; a definição de moeda internacional; os determinantes da internacionalização de moedas; a formação de uma hierarquia de moedas; o conceito de poder monetário; os custos e benefícios da emissão de moedas internacionais; os efeitos das estruturas de rede na dinâmica monetária e; finalmente, as implicações da hegemonia do Dólar para o sistema monetário internacional e a geopolítica mundial em geral. Conclui-se que moeda e poder estatal são mutuamente endógenos, constituindo ciclos retroalimentáveis que historicamente alicerçaram a ascensão e queda de grandes potências e suas empreitadas hegemônicas na construção de ordens mundiais.
dc.descriptionThis essay provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the literature on the internationalization of national currencies. It has the primary aim of elucidating the relationship between currency and state power in order to better comprehend the subsequent distribution of wealth and influence in international relations. It discusses the origins of currency; the definition of an international currency; the determinants of currency internationalization; the formation of a currency hierarchy; the concept of currency power; the costs and benefits of international currency issuance; the effects of network structures in monetary dynamics and; finally, the implications of the current Dollar hegemony for the international monetary system and world geopolitics at large. It concludes that currency and state power are mutually endogenous, constituting self-reinforcing cycles which historically underpinned the rise and fall of great powers and their hegemonic endeavors in building world orders.
