This study aimed to analyze the speech of children, aged 9 and 11 years, about the buying behavior. In this survey, of the qualitative approach, were interviewed 53 children. The interviews were analyzed in the light of the content analysis, considering the following dimensions: consumption and their symbolic representations; reference group and, finally, the influence of the media about consumption. It was found that the consumption, for these children, is something beyond the functional characteristics of the goods and may represent happiness, good things. Still, it was possible to extract from the reports the desire to look like adults they admire, when their family members, and their idols, whether from sports, music, soap operas or movies. The habit of saving was identified in children who receive an allowance, which, in the research, comprises twelve children. All of them claim to save their allowances until they get the amount needed to buy what they want. In this way, the family influence on financial education is verified, causing their present actions to be thought from future consequences. O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar o discurso de crianças, com idades entre 9 e 11 anos, acerca do comportamento de consumo. Na pesquisa, de abordagem qualitativa, foram entrevistadas 53 crianças. As entrevistas foram analisadas à luz da análise de conteúdo, considerando-se as seguintes dimensões: o consumo e suas representações simbólicas; grupo de referência e, por fim, a influência da mídia no consumo. Identificou-se que o consumo, para essas crianças, representa algo que excede as características utilitárias dos bens, podendo representar a felicidade, coisas boas. Ainda, foi possível extrair dos relatos o desejo de se parecerem com adultos que admiram, quando seus familiares, e seus ídolos, sejam do esporte, da música, da novela ou do cinema. O hábito de poupar foi identificado em crianças que recebem mesada, o que, na pesquisa, compreendem doze crianças. Todas elas afirmam poupar suas mesadas até conseguirem o montante necessário para comprar o que desejam. Deste modo, verifica-se a influência familiar na educação financeira, fazendo com que suas ações presentes sejam pensadas a partir de consequências futuras.
