The AISI 1045 is steel used in different applications due to high mechanical properties options. This material is commonly hardened through the quenching treatment. In the quenching are used different substances like quenching media to improve high mechanical properties. In this work, quenching treatments were conducted to study the effect of the water and the vegetable oil like quenching media on the coefficient of friction (COF), wear rate, hardness and microstructural behavior of the AISI 1045 steel. The quenching treatments were heated at 850? C in an electric furnace, and sustained for 40 minutes until to achieve a homogeneous structure. The quenching media used were Water, Soybean oil, Sunflower oil and Canola oil. The results suggested that the use of vegetable oils as quenching media favored the reduction of the COF, as well as, the wear rate in comparison with steel in commercial condition (without hardening) and quenched in water steel. In particular, was demonstrated that using the sunflower oil is possible to obtain microstructures consistent in fine pearlite and bainite and to obtain low COF and wear rate values.
