ABSTRACT: this paper offers a description of the use of impersonal constructions with uno, se and the
2Sg and 3Pl markers in the spoken Spanish of Medellín, Colombia. 447 impersonal constructions
are analysed from seven semi-structured interviews with speakers that belong to different age,
gender and educational groups from the PRESEEA-Medellín Corpus. The results reveal that
the speakers of Medellín tend to be homogeneous with regard to their use of impersonalisation
strategies (preferred forms, functions, interpretation and restrictions), and that their uses coincide
with those uses and restrictions reported in previous studies on general Spanish. The only aspect
that varies among the speakers of this study is the general frequency in which the impersonal
structures are used: men, the young generation (20-34) and those with lower levels of education
produce more impersonal structures than those speakers belonging to the other groups. COL0002831
