| dc.description | RESUMEN : El oleaje del Caribe Colombiano y del golfo de Urabá tiene variabilidad espacial relacionada con las épocas del año y los fenómenos naturales que suceden en ese lugar. En este trabajo se busca avanzar en el entendimiento de esta variabilidad mediante el análisis de datos in situ de boyas administradas por la NOAA, DIMAR, y Corpouraba, así como de boyas virtuales asociadas a salidas del modelo Wave WatchTM III. Se analizó la distribución conjunta entre la altura significante del oleaje y la frecuencia asociada al pico espectral. Se utilizó la teoría lineal de Airy para calcular el origen y tiempo de viaje del oleaje que se genera en el Caribe y que llega a la entrada del golfo de Urabá. Estos cálculos se corroboraron con campos de viento a una altura de 10 metros sobre el nivel del mar del reanálisis ERA-INTERIM. Se encontró que, en la parte norte del golfo de Urabá, el oleaje con mayores alturas significantes es generado principalmente por los vientos alisios, y que el oleaje de periodo más largo es producido tormentas lejanas. Si bien, los mayores valores de altura significante en el Caribe colombiano son generados por los huracanes, la mayoría de eventos que sobrepasan un valor de 3 metros están asociados a eventos generados por los vientos alisios. En general el periodo asociado al pico espectral del oleaje en el Caribe tiene entre 6 y 7 segundos con un leve aumento en las afueras del golfo. Los datos muestran que la zona del golfo de Urabá suele ser la menos afectada por los eventos extremos de oleaje comparado con la costa Caribe colombiana. | |
| dc.description | ABSTRACT :The waves at the Colombian Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Uraba have spatial variability related to seasonal changes and the natural phenomena that occur in this region. This work aim to advance in the understanding of this variability through the analysis of in situ data from buoys from NOAA, DIMAR, and Corpouraba, as well as virtual buoys from outputs of an implementation of the Wave WatchTM III model. The joint distribution of,significant wave height and peak frequency was analyzed. Airy's linear theory was used to calculate the origin and travel time of the waves that are generated in the Caribbean Sea and that reach the mouth to the Gulf of Urabá. These calculations were corroborated using wind fields at 10 meters height from the ERA-INTERIM reanalysis. It was found that the highest wave at the northern part of the Gulf of Urabá are mainly influenced by the trade winds, and that the largest peak periods are produced by distant storms. Although the highest waves at the Colombian Caribbean Sea are generated by hurricanes, most events that exceeded a value of 3 meters were associated with events generated by trade winds. In general, the peak period values in the Caribbean has between 6 and 7 seconds with a slight increase at the outskirts of the Gulf. The data showed that the area of the Gulf of Uraba is usually the least affected by extreme wave events compared to the Colombian Caribbean coast. | |
