ABSTARCT: Positivism as a school of thought involves both practical sense and epistemological, ontological
and methodological sense in everyday accounting life. This thought brings its own stamp to the accounting
development (research, academic practice, profession, and regulation).Positivism was legitimized asa
hegemonic thinking due to its scope to reflect the business world, to achieve instrumental efficacy and
to manipulate reality in a capitalist context where reliable, true and useful figures are needed. However,
positivism insights (fragmented, reductionist and deterministic) and claims (objectivist, causalist, and
homogenizing) have limited its chances and turned its speeches into conventionalist fictions. There are
new approaches that give ontological identity tothe immaterial, symbolic, mental and complex, as well
as methodological approaches that provide cognitive possibilities. We present a reflection that aims for
a more human and social accounting, designed to build a socially useful knowledge and committed to
human future.
