Resumen
Animal welfare during transport is a global concern because of the risks involved, such as injury, disease and stress, especially on long journeys. Several international organizations have legislated on the subject through standards and guidelines. Among them, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) is the main international organization that issues animal welfare standards. The European Union has an extensive regulatory framework on animal welfare, as well as private standards of voluntary application.
The Colombian legal system considers animals as sentient beings and establishes animal welfare as a principle. It is recognized that we have relational duties towards animals that limit our actions. This commitment is reflected in the different norms that regulate animal welfare in the transport of farm animals. This paper analyzes the Colombian regulations on the transport of farm animals in relation to international standards of animal welfare.
