The use of role plays to improve the oral skill of the third English level students of the hotel and tourism management program at the Universidad Del Magdalena in Santa Marta

The ability to express oneself freely in a foreign language both in professional and in everyday context opens a window of opportunities in terms of personal and professional development and brings us one step closer to success in today’s world. The importance of promoting English oral skill development in the classroom is a way to challenge students to improve and enable them to communicate with others. Speaking activities used in the classroom should not only capture student’s interest but also create a real need for communication. This case study, carried out at a public university in Colombia focused on analyzing how the use of role plays can help improve students’ oral skill development. Participants were 21 students from Third English level of Hotel and Tourism Management program at Universidad Del Magdalena. The data was gathered through class observation, a diagnostic and a final test, video role-plays recorded, a survey and a focus group interview. Maestría Magister en la Enseñanza del Ingles
