The present investigation aims to reflexively address the subject of philosophical Cynicism, but concentrating on its varied modes of manifestation throughout much of the history of Western metaphysics. This task requires, however, that we put special emphasis on the aesthetic elements that accompany this emergency. What or what are these elements? That is something that we will have to establish in each case, because in order to carry out our task, we have chosen, for its importance, several moments, authors and works, which will allow us to scrutinize its modulations, tones and variations. The first moment that we will take charge, is the birth of a philosophical sect, back in ancient Greece, where his character will be reflected, for example, in the varied literary repertoire of anecdotes that are referred to his most outstanding figures. In the second place, we will approach the reception of his legacy in Renaissance literature, within the lapse understood from the work of the writer François Rabelais to the philosophers called libertines. In a third moment, we will concentrate on its modern manifestation, also in the hands of important thinkers of the Enlightenment and some American novelists, such as Herman Melville or Nathaniel Hawthorne, who will also allow us to explore through his work, some strange streak of his performance as thought of renunciation. Finally, we will deal with contemporary cynicism as a mass phenomenon, where we will explore not only the subject of truth and its scope related to its discursive inoperability, but we will also analyze its close link with the visual arts and literature, both in the regional as global level. All this, always bearing in mind, that it is fundamental to point out that one of the essential elements of Cynicism, in all its moments, is its condition of being a fact of language.
