Resumen
This project consisted of three qualitative studies based upon a narrative perspective. We interviewed six (n = 6) preservice teachers from a Chilean higher education institution and analysed the relationship between their emotions and their identity shaping processes. The findings show that, at composing their stories, candidates incorporate metaphors, narratives of critical events and reflections that shed light upon the multidimensional process of building their experiences’ meaning. This is also associated with the complexity of challenges they live during, such as delimiting a personal and a professional world, building non-formal professional knowledge and establishing a relationship with their emotions, which occupy a constitutive place in the whole process. The narratives of the candidates are built upon an emotional entanglement that suggests the importance of interpreting the process of becoming a teacher as a collective event, in which future teachers draw upon their experiences to become teachers. Main conclusions of this project advocate looking through non-formal learning processes, incorporating narrative understanding into university supervision and avoiding approaches that consider emotions as isolated phenomena of candidates’ lives.
