This dissertation examines the imperial character of the relationship between the British Empire and South America through the case study of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company (hereafter P.S.N.C. or Company). The thesis suggests that Britain sought consistently to assert its interest and position in the increasing commercial relationship with the region through the Company. This was achieved by means of the expansion of a communication service to the countries and ports of western South America. The Company celebrated contracts with these states, and developed a pioneering and almost non-existent technology in the region. This way, from 1840 to 1878, the British Empire held a dominant maritime position thanks to the use of steamers and a newly organised means of transportation and communication.
