This study examines the symbolic dimensions of “Pinochetismo” during the Chilean post-dictatorship period by analysing the social practices and representations built around the figure of Augusto Pinochet that have made possible for some sectors of the Chilean society to build and legitimize a heroic memory of the dictatorship. Why the crimes perpetrated during the dictatorship fail to tarnish the dictator? What symbolic elements of the political imaginary associated to Pinochet have made possible for some groups of the Chilean society to justify and legitimize the military´s actions and crimes? This thesis aims to explore some answers to these questions from the perspectives of the New Cultural History and Steve Stern´s (2006) approach to the subject of Heroic Memory of dictatorship in Chile. This work explores and analyses the political memory of the civic- military dictatorship through the concept of civil religion. In attempting to understand why Pinochet is remembered as a hero, this study asserts that he represents the desire for strength, glory and triumph, and reflects the struggle against agony, vulnerability, defeat, and hopelessness. Finally, this social imaginary attempts to reimagine, reframe, and redress (or distort) reality. PFCHA-Becas PFCHA-Becas
