O corpo é tipicamente fusiforme, embora dois flagelos originem-se em um compartimento dentro da célula, somente um emerge (e muitas vezes nenhum). O corpo pode torcer e a célula apresenta um flagelo para muitos cloroplastos. No interior do corpo, um fino canal (canal flagelar) dirije-se para o compartimento flagelar, e ao lado tem uma cavidade contrátil.
