Resumen
This article explores the construction of the Avenida Espana, the first intercommunal paved road for cars Chile. The case of the Avenida Espana allows to analyze in detail the place occupied by the new construction technologies in the conformation of the metropolitan area of the great Valparaiso during the first decades of the 20th century. Likewise, this work represented a challenge for urban management, for regulations on the financing of infrastructures and for the conceptualization of the public nature of a public work. The commissioning of this work also implied an irreversible change in the mobility habits of the urban population of Valparaiso and Vitia del Mar and was presented, at an early stage, as a model in the process of transformation and modernization of Chilean roads system in the 1920s.
