Currently, obesity and overweight are considered an epidemic, since it represents
a public health problem worldwide, which predisposes to trigger cardiovascular
and metabolic diseases. In children, these types of alterations in nutritional status
can be frequently observed, together with alterations in carbohydrate and lipid
metabolism. Dyslipidemias are very common in overweight and obese
populations. Nowadays, it is known about the atherogenic potential of
dyslipidemias and the long-term complication that they have. The objective of this
study is to stablish how prevalent dyslipidemias are in obese and overweight
patients as precursors of metabolic diseases in the pediatric population to achieve
a correct focus on prevention and treatment. Results: It was obtained that around
48% of the sample had some type of hypercholesterolemia, 54%
hypertriglyceridemia and at least 68% of the patients in the sample had some type
of dyslipidemia. Conclusion: The prevalence of dyslipidemia in pediatric patients
seems to be high and occurs more frequently in males, sedentary lifestyle seems
to be related to dyslipidemia through the appearance of obesity or overweight,
comorbidities more related to obesity and the overweight were hepatic steatosis,
insulin resistance, hypothyroidism, bronchial asthma, polycystic ovary syndrome,
anxiety disorders and hypertension and finally the most frequent sign or
symptoms in this type of patients seems to be acanthosis nigricans.
