Mitral valve disease is one of the most prevalent heart diseases in canines,
which is the reason why the ACVIM establishes a classification system
according to the stages of this disease, with the aim of facilitating the clinical
approach with patients. This system mentions that treatment should be
implemented once cardiac remodeling is observed, that happens in stage B2.
In the following investigation, the frequency of left ventricular dilatation at the
end of diastole was evaluated in dogs with mitral disease that were in stages
ACVIM B1 that went to cardiology consult at Dr. Pet, through the measurement
of AI/Ao ratio and LVDd in echocardiography, also evaluating the influence of
the variables race, sex, age and weight in the presentation of this condition.
This study had a non-experimental quantitative approach with a descriptive
and correlational scope, where the population corresponded to the canines
that attended the clinic between the months of October to December of the
year 2022. The results reflected a total of 82 dogs diagnosed with this valve
disease, of which 64.63 % were in the ACVIM B1 stage, and from this total,
69.81 % presented volume overload in the left ventricle, however, in the Chi
square test it was observed that none of the aforementioned variables have a
direct effect on this condition. In conclusion, patients in earlier stages of this
disease could establish a therapeutic plan to control its degenerative
development.
