Introduction: the nutritional status of students is conditioned by the eating
patterns adopted from home, so that proper nutrition is essential for the correct
volitional and academic development of young people and adolescents who
are in the school stage.
Objectives: To determine the association between the quality of the school
breakfast and anthropometry with the academic performance in students of
the basic cycle and high school of the Juan León Mera Private School in the
city of Guayaquil.
Methodology: quantitative, prospective, correlational and observational
approach, involved a total of 150 students aged between 11 - 18 years old.
Results: Of the total population of students enrolled in basic education and
high school, most have a high rate of consumption of kilocalories and lipids,
but in contrast, the consumption of micronutrients such as fiber and calcium is
below the level required for optimal development. Despite the unbalanced
consumption of these nutrients, the students present an excellent academic
performance, but they also maintain a high absence.
Conclusion: Academic performance is not related to the quality of school
breakfast or to anthropometric parameters such as BMI.
