Description of the problem: Hepatic encephalopathy is a clinical
expression of a spectrum of potentially reversible abnormalities that are due
to the accumulation of neurotoxic substances in the brain tissue, which is
proportional to the synthetic and reserve function of the liver. This syndrome
is present in 30-60% of patients with liver cirrhosis. Objective: To identify the
prevalence of hepatic encephalopathy in patients diagnosed with liver
cirrhosis admitted to the Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Hospital from January
2017 to January 2020. Methods and materials: Observational,
retrospective, cross-sectional and descriptive epidemiological study. The
data was obtained from selected digital medical records in the A400 system
with a total population of 222 patients. Results: In the present study, the
prevalence of cirrhotic patients who developed hepatic encephalopathy was
found to be 45,9% (n=102) while the remaining 54,1% (n=120) did not
develop this complication. Conclusion: Hepatic encephalopathy, as a
complication of liver cirrhosis, ocurred in roughly half (45,9%) of the patients
admitted to Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Hospital in the time period between
January 2020 to January 2020.
