Introduction: The permanent maxillary first molars present a great challenge for the operator due to
their complex anatomy since there is a high probability that MB2 will be found and not locating it would
be a treatment failure. It is important to know its anatomy perfectly in order to locate MB2.
Objective: The objective of this research was to search the available literature on the efficacy of the
dental microscope to locate the second mesial root canal of the maxillary molar.
Material and methods: This research work is a qualitative, retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive,
non-experimental review of the literature carried out by searching for scientific articles from 2015 to
2021, resulting in 84 articles, but using the inclusion and exclusion criteria only managed to get 30
specific items.
Results: Five folders were created, they were separated by variables and a mother table was made
where the most relevant information of each variable was separated to then carry out the statistical,
descriptive analysis. The prevalence and location of MB2 were evaluated, as well as the advantages
and disadvantages of DSM, its use and the ideal magnification range to locate MB2.
Conclussion: There is a high prevalence of MB2 in PMFM, three types of Vertucii configurations
were presented more frequently. Using the microscope to locate MB2 did present a significant
difference compared to direct vision, however knowing the anatomy of the maxillary first molar makes
a big difference.
