Introduction: Saliva plays important roles in the organism, among the most important of which we have: lubrication of the oral cavity, chewing with the formation of the bolus and its swallowing, as well as in the digestion of food, language, remineralization of the teeth and protection against demineralization of the same, the antimicrobial protec tion and the buffer of the pH, among other functions. The value of the salivary pH oscillates approximately between 6.5 and 7. The pH is altered by the consumption of the tobacco since this one is composed by toxic substances resulting in a pH with a value more than 7 increasing the salivary flow, Smoking is an important risk factor for the presence of periodontal disease, the presence of this pathology is
also one of the causes of changes in salivary pH producing alterations, given by its bacterial anaerobic medium. Objective: To determine the Relationship of Salivary PH in relation to periodontal disease and to tobacco in patients of the UCSG Clinic. Materials and Methods: We performed a descriptive, cross-sectional and analytical study using a survey that included patients with periodontal disease, smokers and non-smokers, the sample was 100 patients from the clinic UCSG A-2017. Results: During this study 100 patients were analyzed, of which 57 were men and 43 were women. It was determined that of the total sample, only 17% of the patients were smokers, these presented an alkaline level, while the non -smokers salivary PH
indices were handled almost proportionally equal between alkaline and neutral. All patients had
periodontal disease, of which the type of periodontal disease that predominated was chronic periodontitis. Conclusion: All patients had periodontal disease, but 62% of the sample had a salivary pH change. The difference in salivary PH between the smoking patients of the UCSG clinic with respect to non-smokers is that in smokers there is always presence of alkaline level in saliva.
