The current tourist trend is marked by the search for unique travel experiences, which influences a greater influx to sites of world heritage. This represents an opportunity for socio-economic development for local communities living within or near these sites, however any tourism initiative must surely be founded on the sustainable use of the site. Sustainable use of the site is bound to turn a competitive strategy, tourist destinations because they operate in a competitive environment and protected natural areas that support visitation, are not separate from this dynamic. In order to keep the tourist use within a safe margin that does not jeopardize the integrity of the site, managers put in place monitoring programs. This article analyzes the monitoring indicators applied in four national parks around the world that have the distinction of being world heritage site. The purpose of analysis was used to confirm that the indicators do not correspond to the three dimensions of sustainability and therefore would not be able to contribute to the competitiveness of tourist destinations enough.La tendencia del turista actual está marcada por la búsqueda de experiencias de viaje únicas, lo cual influye en una mayor afluencia hacia los sitios de patrimonio mundial. Este hecho representa una oportunidad de desarrollo socio-económico para las comunidades locales que habitan dentro o cerca de estos sitios. Sin embargo, cualquier iniciativa turística debe cimentarse en el uso sostenible del sitio. El uso sostenible del sitio está atado a su vez a una estrategia competitiva, pues los destinos turísticos se desenvuelven en un entorno de competencia y los espacios naturales protegidos que admiten visitación no están separados de esta dinámica. Con la finalidad de mantener el uso turístico dentro de un margen seguro que no ponga en riesgo la integridad del sitio, los manejadores ponen en marcha programas de monitoreo. El presente artículo analiza los indicadores de monitoreo aplicados en cuatro parques nacionales alrededor del mundo que tienen la distinción de ser sitios de patrimonio natural de la humanidad. El objetivo de análisis ha sido confirmar que los indicadores utilizados no se corresponden con las tres dimensiones de la sostenibilidad y en consecuencia no estarían en capacidad de aportar suficientemente a la competitividad de sus destinos turísticos.
