The birthplace of Atahuallpa has been the source of various theories of narrators and chroniclers who have used history and memory in order to reveal its origin, as well as understand the reasons for one of the largest civilizations in America to come to an end. This article is the product of a bibliographical investigation of more than twenty historical and contemporary sources that provide clues that prove that Caranqui, in the kingdom of Quito, was the homeland of the last Inca of Tahuantinsuyo. In addition, the implications of the conflict between brothers, hecatombs, animosities in expansionist campaigns, betrayals due to the hunger for gold and resistance in the conquest that gave rise to the future territorial claim between Ecuador and Peru are explored.El lugar de nacimiento de Atahuallpa ha sido fuente de diversas teorías de narradores y cronistas que han usado la historia y memoria con el fin de develar su origen, así como comprender los motivos para que una de las civilizaciones más grande de América llegue a su fin. Este artículo es producto de una investigación bibliográfica de más de veinte fuentes históricas y contemporáneas que proveen pistas que comprueban que Caranqui, en el reino de Quito, fue la tierra natal de último Inca del Tahuantinsuyo. Además, se exploran las implicaciones del conflicto entre hermanos, hecatombes, animadversiones en las campañas expansionistas, traiciones por el hambre del oro y resistencias en la conquista que dieron lugar al futuro reclamo territorial entre Ecuador y Perú.
