This research examines the interdependence between the city and nature and
how it manifests in citizen participation and the defense of collective rights. It
specifically focuses on the relationship between the defense of Rights of Nature and
the exercise of the Right to the City in the context of the Popular Consultation for Water.
The study explores the Right to the City and Rights of Nature, as well as their
recognition in Ecuadorian legislation. It also analyzes the relevance of citizen
participation in the defense of rights, considering both institutional and non-institutional
dimensions. The Popular Consultation for Water is reviewed, including its constitutional
assessment, questions, and results, while collecting perspectives from social leaders,
representatives, and academics. The research highlights the social, political, and
economic tensions involved, demonstrating the connection between the Right to the
City, the defense of Rights of Nature, and the fight against extractivism.
