Resumen
Background: The dimensions of emotional intelligence in nursing personnel who care for
communities, function as a protective factor against the high prevalence of burnout syndrome
and work stress in the profession, and its poor management, has the potential to affect the
quality of patient care and, in general, nursing well-being. Objective: To interpret the emotional
intelligence of nurses in the face of community care in contexts of uncertainty. Methodological
design: A qualitative, phenomenological study was conducted. The sample consisted of 10
nursing professionals working in the city of Guayaquil, to whom a semi-structured survey was
applied, obtaining the theoretical saturation of the data. The information was analyzed with
the Atlas ti v. 22 program. Results: When analyzing the interviews, categories were found
according to the research objectives, finding a higher frequency of negative emotions than
positive ones; however, the positive ones have a positive impact on the quality of the care
given. In addition, a significant personal and work impact is evidenced, surrounded by values
that lead them to a deep reflection, with affective bonds that consolidate their love for what
they do. The social skills and emotional intelligence strategies projected are very varied,
considered key, coupled with personal values applied in community care. Conclusions:
Emotional intelligence and its dimensions serve as an umbrella to protect the mental health of
the nursing staff, which improves their personal well-being and secondarily influences the
quality of the community care they offer.
