Resumen
Background: Obesity and overweight are metabolic diseases with the highest prevalence and incidence, characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat as a response to an imbalance of calories and lower energy expenditure, which is generating comorbidities in adolescence.
General objective: to identify the waist circumference index as an indicator of overweight and obesity in adolescents from the De Sinincay Educational Unit, Cuenca 2022-2023
Materials and methods: quantitative descriptive study, type of diagnostic test validity. We worked with a finite universe made up of 250 high school students aged 14 and 19 from the Sinincay educational unit. The Quetelet index (BMI), waist-height index (ICT), Waist Circumference (CC) and Weight-Waist Circumference index (IPCC) were applied. To verify the reliability of the use, as well as the use of the programs: SPSS and Excel to process the data.
Results: The present study consisted of a predominantly female population (69.9%), ages between 14 and 16 years (73.2%). The BMI of adolescents is normal-weight (41%), overweight (27.8%), Obesity (12%). And 8.5% low weight. In relation to the waist-height index, it was found that 46% (0.43≤ICT<0.51) is normal. The waist circumference ratio is 52% (0.44 ≤ IPCC < 0.80), followed by overweight 38% (0.80 ≤ IPCC < 0.98). Within the relationship between the variables waist-circumference - BMI / waist height - BMI there is a significant relationship (0.000).
Conclusion: the IPCC could be considered together with other indicators to assess overweight and obesity.
