The Artificial Floating Island (AFI) system are considered as an innovative eco-technological alternative designed to uptake pollutants that there are in water bodies. The objective of this research was to evaluate the achira (Canna indica) as a possible phytoremediation species for water contaminated with excess of nutrients. The plants were subjected to 35 days of adaptation and 42 days of development, and then installed in the floating system. To evaluate the remotion, four parameters were analyzed (NO3, PO4, BOD5 and pH), every 15 days for 2 months. The relationship between the time elapsed and the percentage of contaminant removal was determined using RStudio. With the mathematical model it was established that in 49 days a 72% of nitrate removal and a 21% of phosphate removal can be obtained. Likewise, the BOD5 value is inversely proportional to the pH value, having acidic waters with a higher amount of BOD5.
