| dc.description | La demencia constituye uno de los principales problemas de salud a nivel mundial, debido a su elevada prevalencia y alto costo económico y social. El presente artículo aporta una revisión de la literatura orientada a conocer datos que nos permitan identificar los efectos de este trastorno sobre la salud mental de los adultos mayores. La metodología utilizada corresponde a la búsqueda de artículos científicos pertenecientes a revistas indexadas, dicha información responde a datos de los últimos cuatro años. Se lograron identificar los numerosos efectos de este trastorno, estableciendo que repercuten no solo en la cognición del adulto mayor, sino también en su estado de bienestar emocional, causando estragos en sus actividades de vida diaria e instrumental. Los datos aportados por esta revisión revelan la necesidad del reconocimiento de la demencia como un grave y creciente problema de salud pública a nivel mundial.Palabras clave: Trastornos neurocognitivos; demencia; adultos mayores; salud mental. ABSTRACT Dementia constitutes one of the main health problems worldwide, due to its high prevalence and high economic and social cost. This article provides a review of the literature aimed at finding out data that allow us to identify the effects of this disorder on the mental health of older adults. The methodology used corresponds to the search for scientific articles belonging to indexed journals, said information responds to data from the last four years. It was possible to identify the many effects of this disorder, establishing that they affect not only the cognition of the elderly, but also their state of emotional well-being, wreaking havoc on their daily and instrumental activities. The data provided by this review reveal the need for the recognition of dementia as a serious and growing public health problem worldwide.Keywords: Neurocognitive disorders; dementia; older adults; mental health.
