dc.descriptionA través de este artículo se aportan conocimientos sobre la importancia de la terapia ocupacional como disciplina en el campo gerontológico y geriátrico. Los profesionales de esta rama participan con los adultos mayores para mejorar su calidad de vida, potenciar sus habilidades manteniendo sus destrezas, previniendo la dependencia y otros riesgos que conllevan las enfermedades a edad avanzada; donde se usan técnicas personalizadas según el caso que se presente, actuando de manera constante para conseguir los objetivos de cada tratamiento. La terapia ocupacional empieza evaluando las habilidades físicas, mentales y sociales que los adultos mayores aún conservan, una vez detectadas las necesidades se trabaja con la persona de manera individual, adaptándose a sus capacidades, con el objetivo de evitar la pérdida de las funciones e incluso mejorar la autonomía funcional del paciente en cuestión. Es posible argumentar en base a la práctica, que esta profesión va encaminada hacer nuevas experiencias con efectos positivos, haciendo evidente que un simple momento de recreación, estimulación cognitiva y actividades físicas en este grupo etario contribuyen con beneficios de bienestar sociorelacional y psicomotriz.   Palabras claves: Terapia ocupacional, adulto mayor, destrezas, habilidades, autonomía.  ABSTRACT By this article, knowledge about the importance of the occupational therapy are brought up as a discipline in the geronthologycal and geriatric field. Major people in charge of this branch participate with elder people, so, by this way they can improve their quality of life, bump and enforce their abilities keeping their skills, trying to avoid the dependence and other risks that could lead to illnesses at an advanced age, using techniques correctly according to the case presented, acting constantly to obtain the objectives of every treatment. Occupational therapy starts evaluating the physical, mental and social skills which elder people still have, once detected the needs, the work with the person begins individually, suiting into his abilities with an aim, avoid the total lost of the functions and even enhance the functional autonomy of the patient treated.
