Resumen
Liver diseases are alterations that affect the functions of the liver, can be congenital or acquired, among them are: viral, toxic, alcoholic, cirrhosis, hepatic steatosis, among others. They are among the diseases that are least studied in older adults but have an important impact on health. The objective of the research was to analyze the etiology, epidemiology and diagnosis of liver diseases in older adults. A descriptive documentary methodology was used, performing a bibliographic search in the scientific databases: PubMed, Scielo, Elsevier, Medigraphic, Redalyc, books, and health reports including articles published in journals indexed in English, Spanish and Portuguese, made in the last 8 years from 2015 to the present. Hepatitis C presented a higher frequency globally, while hepatitis B prevails among liver diseases in the elderly, hepatocellular carcinoma was the most incident with 56% in the population studied, liver cirrhosis showed a mortality rate of 59.8% and an incidence of 28.3%. Diagnostic methods are complemented according to the liver diseases that are studied. Concluding that the most common cause for the development of liver disease in older adults is the hepatitis C virus followed by the hepatitis B virus. More research is needed on this topic giving relevance to the study group.
