Resumen
Mandibular thrusters are used as an alternative treatment for Class II malocclusion. Mandibular advancement, whether discontinuous with removable appliances or continuous with fixed appliances, causes the teeth, muscles, and bones to change to accommodate a new position and function. Correction of this malocclusion with mandibular thrusters is achieved through orthopedic forces that inhibit growth of the maxilla while stimulating growth of the mandible. The objective of this review is to demonstrate the effectiveness of mandibular thrusters as a viable alternative in the correction of Class II malocclusion. For this, 27 articles from different scientific journals that address dental, skeletal, and soft tissue changes in patients due to the use of mandibular thrusters applied in the treatment of Class II malocclusion were selected. Thus, it is evident that the mandibular thrusters were effective in correcting the main characteristics of Class II malocclusion. In addition, the success of the treatment depends on the pattern of facial growth and the stage of skeletal maturation of the patient at the beginning of the treatment, because individuals at their peak of growth have better adaptive responses.
