Twenty-first century will be characterized by the strength and the expansion of environmental changes and by their consequences. Although Environmental Sciences are a relatively new discipline, it takes on the colossal task of finding the path toward a sustainable relationship between man and nature. In this assay, we discuss the main principles and findings that have contributed to this scientific field, from Classical period to 1962.El siglo XXI se caracterizará por la intensidad y la extensión de las alteraciones ambientales de origen antropogénico y por los problemas que éstas ocasionarán. Aunque se trata de una disciplina relativamente reciente, las Ciencias Ambientales tienen la enorme encomienda de investigar cómo la humanidad podría transitar hacia una relación más sostenible con la naturaleza. En este ensayo se presentan y discuten los principios y descubrimientos que han ido construyendo esta ciencia desde una perspectiva histórica, de la Antigüedad clásica hasta 1962.
